Funny Pinoy cultures. Part Uno

Filed under: conversation, social, weather - Administrator @ 2:30 pm

My Danish colleague has some interesting observations about the Filipino cultures. And I would like to share it with the reading masses - if there are people reading this blog.

Danish: Why do Filipino cover ONLY their hair with their palm when it rains?
Me: Err, I haven’t thought of that.
Danish: Do you have something in your hair to protect that you would sacrifice your whole body to get soaked?
Me: Funny thing is Filipinos love their hair! Actually I think it is embedded in us that once our head is wet we are susceptible to fever.
Danish: OK.

ElbowRoom

Filed under: party, social, office, tips, food, travel - Administrator @ 8:43 am

Last Thursday, the whole Perl team, as well as the QA and the Graphics team went to Elbow Room at Metrowalk, Ortigas for their team building. I was the only one that wasn’t part of either the three teams or with the HR, so in effect I was just a gate crasher, but never a party pooper.

That was the first time I went to Elbow Room and good thing they reserved a VIP room. The VIP room is quite big, with 2 tv sets dedicated for videoke, a long table for the foods, and a billiard table smacked in the center. If you have no plans on renting the VIP room, one can still play billiards on their public area however you lose the videoke and swap it for a live band instead - which is not a bad idea afterall.

The price, as I can recall, is PHP 4,000 for the VIP room from 8PM - 12MN (not bad ehh). However food is not yet part of the package. Compared that to Redbox’s PHP 399 (exclusive of tax) + PHP 99 for buffet per person which is good for 7PM - 12MN.

It was a fun night and we wrapped it up with a final drinking round at Jay-Js.

Why Thin Girls love Fat Guys?

Filed under: health, social, blog, food - Administrator @ 2:10 am

Nep and I were eating at North Park when he saw this group of yuppies (Young Professional), who are incidentally consisted of couples dining. Before that I told Nep I read an article about the reason why thin girls especially Asian girls love fat guys. Then he interrupted me by saying, that behind me was a great example of that theory or let’s just say law. And lo’ and behold, right before my eyes, there is this girl - well she looked common, well ok, she’s white - being embraced by a fat guy.

And then I realized that maybe just maybe thin girls love fat guys because fat guys symbolize happiness, jolliness and a carefree attitude; and you don’t even need to look further than the mighty Buddha himself! Or maybe they want fat guys because they are as adorable and as cute - here fuzzy wuzzy - as polar bears? Well ok, panda bears, oh geez teddy bear it is. Or maybe fat means more money?

Another theory that I cultivated in my mind is that thin girls think that their fat bfs will put them in the pedestal, honestly girls value total submissiveness and undying loyalty. Think about this for a second, fat = lower self-esteem, beautiful gf = higher self-esteem, beautiful gf will leave you = suicide, so fat = undying love.

Of Woman and Man

Man: Why did you make women so beautiful?
God: So that you will love her
Man: But why on earth did you make them so stupid?
God: …So that she will love you.

RedBox

Filed under: party, office - Administrator @ 4:48 pm

The entire Java team and a couple of guys from the management decided to have a team building. And we decided to do it at RedBox. RedBox is known as the videoke place in Greenbelt. It was a nice get-together. Nothing spectacular. Just simple fun. Some of the Java guys are quite serious and it’s really hard to crack a joke at them. But if you think about it that is the real reason for the teambuilding, to get to know your teammates and bash them hard! Wehehe.

Me fail English? Unpossible!

Filed under: office, blog, rant - Administrator @ 12:42 pm

Yesterday I had a meeting together with my Team Lead, VP for Software Development, Head of Research Dev and our Project Manager regarding some technical issues with our process. I quickly explained the current situation, how I approach the solution and the lingering problem that was unfortunately encountered by the program. After that, I asked the Head of Research if he understands and he just said "I’m sorry John I can’t understand you". It hits me. Big time. That is for the first time in my life I stuttered at explaining things in pure English. I blame the hot room that we conducted our meeting or even yet I blame it on my thyroid problem, but then again I couldn’t just pinpoint what caused me to stutter. I am good in delivering speeches (or so I think) and that time I felt ashamed. Good thing our project’s team lead came to my rescue and he explained what I couldn’t. That day definitely sucks.

Driver Segways

Filed under: conversation, travel - Administrator @ 12:59 am

Jeepney drivers are funny bunch of people. Here are the different segways they like to crack and which I heard myself.

Driver: Konteng urong lang, maluwag pa yan, ginagamit yan araw-araw. (Please move, there are still seats available, they are used everyday)

Driver: Oh yung wala pang bayad, maraming po akong pinapakaing anak. (To those that haven’t paid yet, remember I have many mouths to feed)

All hail the internets

Filed under: blog, tips - Administrator @ 5:14 am

Well, I just had my internet connected yesterday, thanks to Smart Bro. After all the hassles of installing it, couple with the contractors not having wires and the "renter" of the rooftop being such an asshole for not allowing the installation of the antenna there. Thank God his brother talked to him to allow the Smart antenna to be installed there.

Having been a Globe broadband customer for a year all I can say is that it is very fast compared to Smart Bro. Smart Bro’s signal sometimes drop to the point of being dead. So before purchasing an internet connection, checked first your need and check first your environment.
